Thyroid fever is caused by an infection with the bacteria Salmonella typhi. Salmonella typhi bacteria live only in humans. People with typhoid fever carry the bacteria in their bloodstream and intestinal tract. When ill people shed Salmonella typhi in their stool, it may get into the food or water supply, causing the disease to spread.
Antibiotics used for treating typhoid fever can kill the typhoid fever bacteria. People undergoing treatment should wash their hands often and refrain from serving food.
