What is lymphocytic thyroiditis (autoimmune thyroiditis)?

    It is the most common kind of thyroiditis which affects children.Lymphocytes are part of the immune system. By default these fighter cells attack the thyroid cells,resulting in its accumulation in the glandular region causing inflammation(with pain) and swelling of the gland. Initially the gland becomes overactive resulting in hyperthyroid symtoms in the person. Later on it becomes underactive causing hypothyroid symptoms to occur.
