Thyroid disease ( an auto-immune disease) may cause bulging eyes due to swelling in the tissues in and around the eye. This is due to deposition of protein in the orbital tissues. This may give a staring eye appearance, symptoms like excessive tearing & painful eye movements. They disappear with treatment. Hypothyroidism may sometimes just cause dryness in the eye which can be treated with lubricating drops.Nothing specific can be done to avoid these symptoms, except for prevention of infection, and going to your physician promptly.
